Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation

Sunday, 28 June 2015

I have extremely pale skin (so pale I actually reflect the sun) and seeing as most make-up companies seem to believe human skin tone is closely related to that of a Wotsit they make even the palest foundations orange toned; so, after 20 years of struggling with orange-face, white-neck syndrome I decided to go and get matched properly.

Id been looking at the Double Wear foundation for a while having seen several airbrushed looking faces on Instagram claiming it was down to this. I also needed a foundation that would stay put for longer than 30 minutes instead off sliding of my face, so off I went to the Estee Lauder Counter.

Surprise surprise I was matched with shell (1C0) - the palest shade they have.

The lovely lady on the counter applied a full face of foundation for me so I had a better idea of how it would look before I purchased.

My skin looked amazing! Blemishes, redness, dark circles - everything was covered with no concealer in sight. And my neck and face finally matched in colour!

Happy to look airbrushed everyday for the rest of my life I practically threw my £30 at her pretty certain I'd just found the perfect foundation but...

Getting home a few hours later, looking in the mirror and being confronted with a foundation moustache was the last thing I wanted having just parted with £30 for a foundation. It had gone so patchy and I was pretty convinced I'd just brought home the biggest waste of money.

The following day I applied the foundation myself and the results were so much better.

I've found the foundation sits best applied with a flat foundation brush and then buffed into the skin with a buffing brush (I use the real techniques brushes). Since applying it this way I've no patchiness and definitely no foundation moustaches.

There are some negatives to the foundation:

  1. It doesn't come with a pump (BE CAREFUL! I managed to destroy an £800 cream carpet knocking over a bottle of this) and there isn't the option to purchase one either however, I've heard the Mac foundation pumps cut down slightly fit and work perfectly fine but I haven't tried it myself.
  2. Due to the lack of a pump it can also be quite easy to waste product. Each time I poured product onto my hand I used too much. I've found the best way is to shake the bottle before opening and then using the product that is inside the lid and the lip of the bottle.
  3. I love a good highlighter but I have noticed that cream or liquid type highlighters do cause the foundation to go patchy. Powder highlighters have been fine though and I have also mixed Mac strobe liquid into the foundation before applying and that has been fine too.
  4. If you have dry skin this is not the foundation for you - it will be cakey and accentuate any dryness.
  5. If you have dry patches the foundation will highlight these so moisturise thoroughly before using.
The positives do outweigh the negatives and the negatives are all things that can be dealt with easily so don't let them put you off.

  1. This foundation has such a good range of colours and is the only brand I've found personally that has really pale shades of foundations without orange tones.
  2. It really does stay in place. I've put this on in the morning, been out all day then gone out in the evening and it looks exactly the same as it did when first applied.
  3. Anything applied over the top - contour, blusher, brow powder - also stays in place with this as a base
  4. It covers everything and some days I can even skip concealer.
  5. A little goes a long way. I use the tiniest amount to cover my whole face.

I decided to apply to foundation to just half my face so you could see a true comparison. See unattractive picture below...

I did experience some teething problems with this foundation but once I found solutions and figured out what products did and didn't work well with it it was fine.

I love this foundation, I'm currently on my third bottle and I'm not looking to change my foundation any time soon. I would recommend this every time.

Estee Lauder Double Wear is £29.50 for 30ml from boots and you can purchase here
